DISTRIBUTED DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

What we are doing today, what we are gaining, what we are losing today and in which proportion, who is going to tell us tomorrow - DATABASE. To prepare records efficiently for present and future references is called database management. Once database is created, other issues arises like:

Ø Who will access database and with what privileges.
Ø Where database to be placed.
Ø Who will retrieve the data and in which manner.
Ø How database to be kept updated.
Ø How to minimize the time and cost factor, without sacrificing the ease, security

To manage all these issues, any management system is in demand, and it doesn't seems to be a single person job. The management system that takes care of all these functionalities - is called DBMS, Database Management System, specialized software, and has some distinguishing features.

A company is a composition of different units says sales, purchase, finance, legal etc. If sales and purchase department are not able to share information at time, the consequences will be severe, as the economics fundamental Demand and Supply will fail, as a result company has to bear loss, if it continues, ultimately company have to sink. This implies that accurate bit of information at right instance is vital, otherwise results are severe. This indicate sharing of information at different nodes is must, either between different units of company, different branches of company within same state, country or getting unbounded with geographical limitations.

Two techniques to enable sharing are:
· Distributed database management system.
· Parallel database system.

Distributed database system is a collection of multiple logically interrelated databases distributed over a computer network, and a distributed database management system (DDBMS) as a system software that manages the distribution transparent to the user.

Parallel database system is one that seeks to improve the performance through parallel implementation of various operations such as loading data, building indexes and evaluating queries.

In todays Indian scenario, industries are going in private hands and the business leaders wants to fully utilize as well as explore the business resources. They are more inclined toward DDBMS rather than the centralized because one of the major factor i.e. flexibility. Flexibility here means that there are no geographical limitations, an industry may have any corporate or regional offices, subunits or sister concerns which they want to be in touch with at their moment of desire or need.

Today merges, acquisition, downsizing\rightsizing is stepping in the organizations. In these case the most typical job is to find IT solution. Combining two companies databases together upto a defined limit, applying new constraint and users, ensuring security, reliability with the ease of use. Here DDBMS ensures unbiased service to all the authorization.

DDBMS is highly essential for mobile professionals to take an edge. Mobile professionals may be:

Ø Salesperson - to represent the sale graph on yearly basis, monthly basis or current market status in respect of any particular product, region, dealer etc.
Ø Share brokers/holders - to have keen eye on their money matters.
Ø Property dealers - to provide customers the latest rate any specific location being even on a remote site.
Ø Research & development personnel - also get benefited by DDBMS as they can speed up their research if some similar investigation results are out and can add significance in their piece of work.
